Description: The project addresses the issue of septic tank maintenance, a leading cause of septic system failure in both new and existing systems. It adopts the concept of pollution prevention through education and outreach activities that promote preventive maintenance.

Prevention of Ground water Contamination from Septic Tank Sources in the Border Region of New Mexico-Chihuahua – EPA Border 2012 Grant X4 97675201 (Oct. 1, 2004-Dec. 31, 2005)
This project provided useful tools for property owners to understand and maintain proper septic maintenance and operation. The project demonstrated a reduction in the septic emergencies in two of three New Mexico border communities where the project was applied. Project deliverables included

- Recommendations for extending the project to other border counties
